January 2012

Just a heads up. My internet is down

because I haven’t paid the bill. lol oops. I’ll have limited internet access until I pay it (mainly phone and campus). Perhaps it’s for the best. I’ll actually be able to finish laundry and clean my room. lol

Hope you all are having a wonderful day. :) I know I am! It was 63 degrees out and absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I got a great workout in. Got the house to myself for now so no stress from family. And the scale was very friendly this morning. I ain’t complaining! :))

01/30: Input/Output

Input - caloriecount.com

Output

Swimming x 90min - 695
Cost of Living - 1640

Deficit: 660

Perfect. So I ended up hitting the pool after all! :)) And sooo glad I did. I missed swimming soooo badly. I missed the water. The cool feeling. The relaxing isolation, and the distant sounds of everything around me. Ended up going longer than I planned, but not regretting it. My limbs feel amazingggg because I stretched really well. It’s like that limp feeling like you exhausted your muscles, but it’s a good feeling. I need to cut down on cardio machines and swim more often. It will do me good, even if I don’t burn as many calories it’s all good. Overall, had a good day. Only thing that I’ve been lacking is sleep! My parents were in the kitchen again last night, just talking away and being loud. Didn’t end up passing out until 1:30AM if not later and woke up at 7AM for class (they sleep in in the morning) :( This can’t go on. It’s going to be the end of me if I don’t get adequate sleep. If it continues I’m going to kick them out of the kitchen LOL.

am i supposed to live off of fkin veggies and fruits for the rest of my life? is that all i'm ever supposed to eat cause it sure seems like it

No. I eat veggies because I like them and I only eat the ones I like, I actually limit my fruit, I eat whole grains like oatmeal, buckwheat, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, whole grain bread, tortillas, lots of protein from lean meat like chicken, turkey, beef, tuna, seafood, eggs, deli meats, I consume dairy like cheese, yogurt, milk, ice cream, I cook all of my meals with butter, I eat crepes, pancakes, muffins, pizza, fries/regular potatoes, I eat fats like avocado, nuts, salad dressings etc. I eat a lot of different stuff. Eating only fruit and veggies isn’t healthy. You need a balanced diet. And if you find it hard to create a balanced diet you’re either eating the wrong foods or you’re simply not eating enough (restricting your calorie intake too much).

This is really random, but when you burn fat, where does it go? Does it turn into energy or what..?

The fat gets broken down into a series of metabolic processes for energy so your fat cells shrink, then your body expels the bi-products (exhale carbon dioxide, sweat/pee out water).

You can read more about it here.

Yes but i'm eating very healthy I just don't know if that amount of exercise is enough?

Why wouldn’t it be? What makes you think it isn’t enough?

Do you think doing 30DS (level 3) 3 times a week, yoga 20-30 minutes a day and pilates 3 times (20-30 minutes) is enough to lose fat and build muscle? I'm only trying to lose 6-8lbs.

All the exercise in the world is worthless if you don’t have the proper diet.

I'm trying to lose weight but I have a problem with binge eating sometimes. Often I'll maintain a calorie deficit but I do that by walking off every extra calorie I consumed. I use a calorie counter which suggests my net be 1200 but I typically keep it around 1300-1400. On a day I binge say I make it to 1500 calories then go for a three hour walk which burns around 500 calories. I know binge eating is wrong, but is this much cardio unhealthy of me?

I don’t know your stats. But right off the bat I’m going to assume you’re not eating enough/eating the wrong types of food. (1400 calories in junk will not leave you satiated like 1400 calories in healthy food). So that’s probably why you’re binging because your body isn’t getting the nutrients that it needs. The next time you feel a binge coming on, you need to stop yourself (whether it’s because you’re hungry or because you’re emotional). Then opt for a balanced meal instead. And I personally would never have time to exercise for 3hours straight every day. I burn 500 calories in about half an hour. No, there’s nothing wrong with walking 3 hours a day. But if you want faster and better results I suggest you up your intensity level and shorten the duration. But aiming to burn 500 calories per workout is great! That’s how I create my deficit. :) Hope this helps.

Hi! You're pages are very helpful! :) I was just wondering if you noticed your face changing along your journey? Have a wonderful day!!

I have! That’s pretty much the first thing that changes tbh. If I flip through pictures from my highest weight to recent pictures, there’s definitely a significant difference. Oh man, I think once I reach my next GW I’ll post facial progress pictures. :))

What do you mean by intervals? 2 mins? 5 mins? Also is walking uphill good? what body parts does it work? sorry for all the questions haha :)

In intervals, meaning try jogging/running for as long as you can sustain it. Then walk to catch your breath, then jog again as long as you can sustain it. Overtime you will improve to the point where you can jog/run non-stop without having to take breaks to walk. Walking uphill is great, it forces you to work harder in order to maintain your stability. Essentially it works almost all your main muscle (core, abs, back to maintain stability, legs, and arms if you’re swinging them side to side. I don’t know the specifics off the top of my head (and am crunched for time right now). So feel free to google the areas it targets.

I think it's important to emphasize that muscle doesn't "replace" fat -- muscle and fat are two different things. One doesn't become the other, and you always have both. It's just a matter of increasing muscle and reducing fat. That is all. :P (and not saying that you said anything contrary to this, just wanted to single out this issue)

Agree 100% :))

I haven't exercised properly in a long time and recently started going to the gym, usually I powerwalk uphill on the treadmill for an hour and then I sometimes go on the bike for 20mins, is that a good workout or should I be doing more?

I can’t really make any assumptions based off of that little bit of information. But generally speaking, any exercise is better than none. I think if you can sustain a powerwalk for an hour that you should try to take it to the next level and slowly incorporate jogging intervals (unless you have some kind of knee/joint condition preventing you from doing so/I’m not a doctor so consult with your physician before starting a new exercise regime).

Only way you or anyone will improve is by challenging yourselves. :)

Of course you are right in that if one overeats they may still keep or gain fat on their legs, but what weight training does for legs encourages the body to build muscle there, replacing fat, making them look leaner if the person is also at a caloric deficit. You're both correct, but the answer is more of a combination of both.

For argument’s sake, you can achieve the same results without weight training your legs. The muscle you build doing squats and lunges doesn’t replace the fat that’s there. The fat becomes depleted evenly throughout your body as your body uses energy. Building and training additional muscle mass will indeed burn more calories than if you had less muscle mass (thus speeding up weight loss/body fat loss). But just because you train your legs doesn’t mean excess amounts of body fat is going to get burned from that area. Building 1lb of trained muscle in your legs would theoretically burn the same amount of calories as building 1lb of trained muscle in your abs, back, and arms for example. Assuming that the muscle is trained at an equivalent ratio. Hence the same rate of body fat would be burned off the body regardless of where the additional muscle mass was increased.

Hi, I love reading your blog but I was wondering what your background was in exercise physiology? I'm just curious as to where you are getting your advice from, whether it may be from personal experience or schooling because it seems like you've got a lot of people asking for advice on how to tone up and I think it's important for your followers to know where you advice is coming from. Please do not take offense, I really do love your blog. I am just curious!

About as much background as any other weight loss blog.
